ISM in Detail

Why is sanctions monitoring essential for companies?

  • Minimise financial risks
  • Protect reputation
  • Comply with legal requirement
  • Growing number of sanctions

Financial sanctions and trade restrictions are key tools in the enforcement of international security policy. Violations of these sanctions can result in heavy fines or reputational damage. Growing geopolitical tensions, such as Russia's war against Ukraine, have led to a significant increase in the number of sanctioned entities. This poses new challenges for compliance departments around the world.

Without external support, it is almost impossible to manage the increasing number of sanctions. Comprehensive sanctions monitoring is essential for compliance departments to meet legal requirements and minimise financial risks.

Which sanctions lists are included in ISM?

To help you maintain your sanctions lists, ISM includes the sanctions lists of the following sanctions authorities and their financial sanctions against institutions and organisations.

Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC)

Enforces economic and trade sanctions based on US foreign policy and national security objective

Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP)

Coordinates the foreign and security policy actions of EU member states, including the imposition of sanctions

Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI)

Implementation and enforcement of financial sanctions in the UK

United Nations (UN)

Consolidated list of the United Nations Security Council

How does ISM support you in monitoring sanctions lists?

On each trading day, the sanctions lists of the relevant authorities are checked four times during the course of the day for any updates. Newly sanctioned entities are compared with our database and positive assignments of entities from the sanctions lists are marked accordingly in the WM database. The names of these sanctioned entities are mapped to our complete database of available financial instruments (more than 3 million). The result is an up-to-date list of sanctioned entities and financial instruments for each trading day.

In addition, a separate CSV file is available containing sanctioned entities from the sanctions lists that are not part of the WM database.

Rising fines underline the importance of good monitoring

Fines for sanctions violations have increased significantly in recent years. In 2023 alone, the US Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control imposed fines totalling more than USD 1.5 billion – the highest amount ever recorded in a calendar year. This highlights the importance of ongoing sanctions monitoring to avoid compliance breaches.
